The Green throat (Garganta Verde) is a spectacular canyon carved by the river of the pine forest (Arroyo del Pinar), located about 5 km from the village of Zahara of the Sierra, in the Park of the Sierra de Grazalema. It takes its name from the dense vegetation covering the vertical walls reaching up to 400 meters deep.
The course lasts 2 hours on a 2.5 km trail along the canyon. Keep an eye on the surrounding landscape: the Wild olive trees, Palm trees, mastic trees, the birds, as soon as the rocks of the Garganta.
Stop at the balcony of El Arroyo de Bocaleones observation to appreciate the size of the throat. From here, you can also see one of the largest colonies of Griffon Vultures in Europe.
The village of Zahara of the Sierra
Continue to Zahara of the Sierra, a popular "white village" in the province of Cadiz and enjoy panoramic views from his castle at the top of a hill overlooking the Sierra de Grazalema natural park. Look at his Castle, built on a rocky peak above the turquoise waters of the Lake, and whitewashed houses. Visit during the hot summers of Andalusia, and you will understand why the houses are in light colors.
With a field of more than 70 square km, the city is surrounded on all sides by hills between 310 and 1,000 metres. With about 1 600 inhabitants, it is called Zaharenos, probably derived from the Arabic word "sahra", which means desert.
